About Design
Whether you have a ring in mind or are still exploring, we’ll help you bring the details into focus.
At SB Studio in Edmonton, designing an engagement ring begins with a conversation. We want to understand what you are drawn to, how you will wear the ring and which details matter most to you. From there, we help you bring the choices together.
Our consultations are complimentary, and there are two ways to begin.

Build and explore your ring in the studio
Our in-house design system lets you explore the individual elements of your ring, including the band, stone type, diamond shape, carat weight, metal and setting.
You can also use our magnetic ring builder to try different combinations on your hand. Changing one element at a time helps you see how a wider band, a different shape or another setting changes the whole ring.
This is particularly useful if you find it difficult to picture a finished design from photographs. You can take part in building the combination yourself, with our guidance as you compare your options.
The builder is a tool for exploring style and proportion. The exact dimensions and details of your finished ring will depend on the stone and design selected.
Bring us your ideas
If you already have something specific in mind, bring photographs, sketches or examples of details you love.
You might like the band from one ring, the setting from another and the proportions of a third. Tell us what appeals to you about each. Side-view photographs are especially useful for understanding setting height and details that may not appear in a photograph taken from above.
We can discuss the metal, diamond or gemstone, setting and construction, then provide a quote based on the proposed design.
Reference images help communicate your preferences. The finished design also needs to suit your chosen stone, your hand and the way you intend to wear it.
Start with a comfortable budget
There is no required amount to spend on an engagement ring. Sharing a comfortable price range helps us guide the choices from the beginning.
Think about your priorities. You may care most about a particular stone shape, a larger centre stone, an intricate setting or a substantial gold band. Knowing which details matter most helps us explore options without losing sight of what you love.
Consider how the ring will fit into your life
A ring should feel good beyond the appointment. Consider your work, hobbies and how comfortable you are removing it for activities.
Setting height, band width and the amount of small-stone detailing can affect how a ring feels and the care it needs. A lower setting may appeal if you prefer a ring that sits close to the hand. A more raised design may create a different profile and offer room for a wedding band beneath it.
No setting makes a ring indestructible. We can discuss practical choices and explain where a design may need more attention over time.
Look at the ring from every angle
The view from above is only part of the design.
Consider the side profile, how the setting meets the band, the shape of the claws or bezel, and how the ring feels between neighbouring fingers. These small details can make a design feel distinctly yours.
Stone orientation is another option. An elongated stone can sit along the finger or across it in an east-west setting, giving the same shape a different character.
Think about your wedding band early
Even if you are not ready to choose a wedding band, it helps to consider how you would like the two rings to sit together.
Would you prefer a straight band that sits flush against the engagement ring? Do you like a small gap? Would you enjoy a curved or contoured band?
Some engagement-ring settings accommodate a straight band more easily than others. Discussing this early lets us consider the pair together.
Choose the stone and setting together
Your stone influences the dimensions and construction of its setting. Shape, measurements and depth matter alongside carat weight.
We primarily work with lab-grown diamonds and can also discuss natural diamonds, recycled natural diamonds and other gemstones according to your preferences and availability.
As the design develops, we will talk through how your chosen stone works with the band and setting. The aim is to bring your preferred appearance together with a practical, well-considered design.
Your quote and production timeline
Once we understand the proposed design and materials, we can provide a quote. Changes to the stone, metal or setting may affect the price, so it is helpful to discuss those choices together.
Before committing to production, make sure you understand the agreed specifications, ring size, personalization, deposit requirements and estimated completion date. Custom orders are subject to our Refund & Exchange Policy.
Our rings are made to order, with production typically taking 2–6 weeks, after final design approval. We will discuss the timeline for your project. If you are planning a proposal or working toward a wedding date, let us know at the first appointment.
Planning a surprise
You can design a ring with us on your own or come in together.
For a surprise, start with the jewelry your partner already wears and any preferences they have mentioned. A trusted friend or family member may be able to help.
If you are unsure of their ring size, tell us before finalizing the design. A borrowed ring is most useful when it fits the intended finger, and some designs have more resizing flexibility than others.
Support after your ring is finished
Our relationship does not end when you collect your ring. SB Studio offers cleaning, inspections and resizing, and we can explain the care appropriate for your particular design.
Ask us about maintenance at your consultation, especially if you are considering detailed settings, small accent stones or a finish that you would like to keep looking a particular way.
Begin with a conversation
You do not need to have every detail decided before visiting. Bring your ideas, your questions and an open mind. We will help you explore the possibilities and understand the decisions along the way.
